Kalahari Wilderness, Refined
Tswalu Private Reserve, South Africa
Visually striking and architecturally thoughtful, Tswalu’s The Motse blends rustic charm with contemporary design influences in the heart of South Africa’s Kalahari Desert. Set within Tswalu Private Reserve, this lodge offers a safari experience unlike any other in the country — one defined by vast open landscapes and rare desert-adapted wildlife.
Beyond the traditional safari species, guests may encounter meerkats, aardvark, pangolin and the region’s iconic black-maned lions. The Motse has been designed with couples and families in mind and consists of just nine spacious legae (Tswana for “little house”). Three are family legæ, offering additional space for multigenerational travel.
Each legae features a sitting area with a wood-burning stove, a study nook and a private shaded veranda with a large daybed overlooking the desert. A nearby waterhole attracts wildlife throughout the year, particularly during the dry season.
The main guest areas include multiple dining and relaxation spaces, two swimming pools, a fire pit for sundowners, a library, boma, boutique store, gym and the Tswalu Spa.
