Seychelles Islands: Beaches, Reefs and Private Luxury

The Seychelles is a breathtaking archipelago of 115 coral and granite islands scattered across the Indian Ocean. Known for its powder-soft beaches, crystal-clear lagoons and iconic granite boulders, it has become one of the world’s most sought-after luxury and honeymoon destinations.

Mahé and Praslin offer vibrant island culture, pristine national parks and exceptional resorts, while private islands such as North Island, Frégate, Cousine and Desroches deliver remarkable privacy and barefoot luxury.

With six marine national parks, thriving coral reefs and extensive protected wilderness, the Seychelles is a paradise for snorkeling, diving and nature lovers. Further afield, the UNESCO-listed Aldabra Atoll protects the world’s largest population of giant tortoises and represents one of the archipelago’s most extraordinary conservation success stories.

Seychelles FAQs

When is the best time to visit the Seychelles?

The Seychelles is a year-round destination with consistently warm tropical temperatures, but the character of a stay changes with the seasons.

April, May, October and November are among our favorite months to visit. These transition periods often bring calmer seas, lighter winds and excellent visibility for snorkeling and diving, making them particularly rewarding for travelers focused on marine activities.

From June to September, the southeast trade winds bring slightly cooler temperatures, lower humidity and steady breezes. This period is excellent for hiking, beach walks and exploring the islands’ dramatic granite landscapes. Some coastlines can experience rougher seas, but sheltered beaches generally remain comfortable for swimming.

From January to March, conditions are warmer, more humid and wetter, with tropical showers more common. The islands are especially lush at this time, the ocean remains warm and the atmosphere feels distinctly tropical.

Overall, the Seychelles is a rewarding destination throughout the year, but April to May and October to November are particularly strong for travelers looking for the best balance of calm seas, warm weather and marine visibility.

Which islands should I visit in the Seychelles?

Most travelers begin on Mahé for its beaches, national parks and luxury resorts, then continue to Praslin to explore the Vallée de Mai and enjoy its slower island atmosphere. La Digue is known for its iconic granite boulders and clear lagoons, while private islands such as North Island, Desroches, Frégate and Cousine offer exceptional privacy, elegant villas and world-class Indian Ocean experiences.

Co-founder Kyle Green also recommends keeping an eye on Frégate Island, which is planned to reopen in 2026 following an extensive redevelopment. The private island remains deeply conservation-focused and is home to around 3,500 free-roaming Aldabra giant tortoises, alongside important seabird, turtle and habitat restoration projects.

Is the Seychelles a good destination after a safari?

Yes. Many Ubuntu travelers choose to relax in the Seychelles after their safari. It is one of the most popular post-safari island extensions in Africa.

With calm turquoise waters, useful regional connections from Nairobi and Johannesburg and a wide selection of private island retreats, the Seychelles offers a seamless transition from the African bush to a luxury beach escape. The combination of privacy, warm weather and exceptional marine life makes it a favorite for both honeymoons and family travel.

Most travelers spend four to six nights in the Seychelles after a safari. Four nights works well for a single-island stay, while five to six nights gives you more time to slow down or combine two islands without making the journey feel rushed.

For travelers staying on a private island, we usually recommend at least four nights so there is enough time to enjoy the beach, marine activities and the resort itself.

Is the Seychelles good for families?

Yes. The Seychelles works very well for families, particularly those looking for a relaxed beach extension after safari. Many luxury resorts offer family villas, children’s activities, calm swimming beaches and flexible dining, while private islands can be especially good for multigenerational trips where space and privacy matter.

The key is choosing the right island and resort, as some properties are more naturally suited to couples while others are excellent for families.
