A Honeymoon Safari, Designed at Your Pace

Best for: BIG Five | Honeymoon | Conservation Experiences | Cape winelands

Inspired by Travel + Leisure photographers Adriana and Rafael, this 12-day honeymoon through South Africa was designed around one simple idea, travel at your own pace. Too excited to wait for safari? Adriana couldn’t either. They chose to start where most trips build toward. Straight into the wild. No easing in. Just early mornings, close-range sightings and the kind of Big Five encounters that set the tone for everything that follows.

At Tengile River Lodge in the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, the focus is on exceptional guiding and some of the most consistent leopard sightings in Africa. From there, andBeyond Phinda Forest Lodge adds contrast. A private reserve shaped by seven distinct ecosystems, known for cheetah, black rhino and a more varied safari experience.

Only then does the journey begin to slow. Cape Town creates space to explore, from the Cape Peninsula to Table Mountain, before shifting fully in the Cape Winelands at La Residence. Vineyard views, long lunches and unhurried afternoons bring a natural close to a honeymoon built entirely around their rhythm.

Sabi Sand Nature Reserve | Tengile River Lodge

The Sabi Sand Nature Reserve shares an unfenced border with Kruger National Park, creating one of the most wildlife-dense safari regions in Africa.

This is where safari becomes precise. Known for exceptional leopard sightings and highly experienced guides, game drives here often deliver close-range predator encounters, with lion, elephant, rhino and buffalo regularly seen.

Tengile River Lodge sits in a prime position along the Sand River, offering a quieter, more exclusive section of the reserve. Fewer vehicles, strong traversing rights and expert guiding make this one of the most consistent Big Five safari experiences in South Africa.

Phinda Private Game Reserve | andBeyond Phinda Forest Lodge

Phinda Private Game Reserve offers something completely different. Spread across seven distinct ecosystems, this is one of the most ecologically diverse safari regions in South Africa.

The reserve is particularly well known for cheetah sightings and conservation-led experiences, including tracking black rhino on foot. The variation in landscape, from open grasslands to rare sand forest, creates a more dynamic and wide-ranging safari.

Phinda Forest Lodge, set within dense forest, feels more secluded and immersive. It is a quieter, more intimate experience, and often a favourite for travellers looking for something beyond the traditional safari format.

Cape Town | The Silo Hotel

Cape Town shifts the pace completely. After the intensity of safari, this is where the journey opens up.

Explore the Cape Peninsula with a private guide, from Chapman’s Peak Drive to Boulders Beach, or take to the water for a different perspective along the coastline. Mornings can be spent hiking Lion’s Head or Table Mountain, with afternoons left open for the city’s restaurants, galleries and waterfront.

The Silo Hotel offers one of the most distinctive stays in the city, positioned above the Zeitz MOCAA with panoramic views across Table Mountain and the harbour.

Cape Winelands | La Residence

The final chapter slows everything down.

Set in Franschhoek, La Residence is surrounded by vineyards and mountain ranges, offering one of the most private and romantic settings in the Cape Winelands. This is where the structure of the trip fades, replaced by long, unplanned days.

Private wine tastings, vineyard picnics and slow afternoons by the pool define the experience. Evenings move into candlelit dinners and quiet moments overlooking the valley.

It is a natural ending. Not a highlight to chase, but a place to pause.

Plan Your Honeymoon Safari

Reach out and let’s start talking. We’ll listen and begin to tailor a private, luxury honeymoon through South Africa based on exactly how you want to travel. From Big Five safari to Cape Town and the Winelands, we’ll handle every detail.

When is the Best Time to visit South Africa?

South Africa is a true year-round destination. The best time to visit depends on where you’re going and what you want to experience. For classic Big Five safaris in Kruger, Sabi Sand, and Madikwe, the dry season from May to September offers the best wildlife viewing. For Cape Town, the Winelands, and the Garden Route, the summer months from November to March bring warm weather, sunny days, and coastal charm.

Peak Safari Season (May to September)

  • Big Five sightings are frequent and highly visible
  • Excellent conditions for walking safaris in private reserves
  • Mornings and evenings are cool, but midday can be warm
  • Minimal rain and very little risk of mosquitoes
  • Great for multi-generational travel and mobile game drives

Cape Town Note (May to September):
This is low season for Cape Town, meaning great value and quieter experiences. You may encounter rainy days with the seasonal cold fronts. But clear skies do return. The city’s food, wine, and boutique hotels remain world-class. Think moody skies over Table Mountain, fewer crowds at top restaurants, and ideal conditions for hiking and photography. Cape Town – and Capetonians – know how to deliver the magic, no matter the weather.

Green Safari Season (November to March)

  • Excellent birding and newborn wildlife (especially December–February)
  • Afternoon storms cool down hot days
  • Fewer crowds and strong lodge availability
  • Best for seasoned safari-goers, photographers, or guests seeking value
  • Tswalu, Kwandwe and Phinda remain excellent year-round options

Cape Town Note (November to March):
Bring the party! This is Cape Town’s peak summer season. December to February is warm, festive, and full of energy. Beaches and bars are a vibe, and restaurant bookings fill fast (that’s where we come in). Our own Capetonian on the team will tell you that March is the sweet spot. The crowds thin out, the wind calms down, and you’ll have a better chance of landing that top table with a view.

South Africa Honeymoon FAQs

Is South Africa good for a luxury honeymoon safari?

Yes. South Africa offers one of the most complete honeymoon experiences in Africa, combining high-end safari lodges, consistent Big Five game viewing and vibrant cities like Cape Town, along with scenic regions such as the Cape Winelands. A strong tourism infrastructure also makes travel between destinations seamless, particularly for first-time safari travellers.

What is the best time for a South Africa honeymoon?

In terms of safari and wildlife, the dry winter months from May to September offer the most consistent game viewing. Cape Town and the Cape Winelands are at their best from October to April, with warmer weather and long outdoor days.

For this reason, this itinerary works well year-round with slight seasonal adjustments. We often recommend travelling in the shoulder seasons, where you can enjoy strong safari conditions alongside quieter periods in Cape Town, often with more favourable lodge availability and rates.

Why combine Sabi Sand and Phinda?

Sabi Sand offers some of the most consistent Big Five sightings in Africa, particularly leopard, with close-range encounters and highly experienced guiding. Phinda provides contrast, with a more diverse safari across seven distinct ecosystems and strong sightings of cheetah and black rhino.

At Phinda, the experience extends beyond traditional game drives, with additional activities including walking safaris, conservation experiences and the option to explore the nearby Indian Ocean coastline.

How long should a South Africa honeymoon be?

We recommend 10 to 12 days to comfortably combine safari, Cape Town and the Cape Winelands without rushing the experience. With Ubuntu Travel, each journey is tailored to your schedule and travel preferences.

Is this honeymoon itinerary tailor-made?

Yes. Each honeymoon is designed around your schedule and travel style, with carefully selected lodges, seamless connections between destinations and full support throughout your journey. This South Africa Honeymoon: Sabi Sand, Phinda and Cape Town is a showcase of what is possible.

How far in advance should I book my honeymoon?

For peak travel seasons, we recommend booking at least 9 months in advance. If you would like a wider selection of lodges, or to take advantage of honeymoon offers, 12 months is ideal.
