Kalahari Desert
Botswana’s Adventure Capital
The Kalahari Desert is known for its semi-arid landscapes, unique desert creatures, and epic sunsets. A vast savanna in Southern Africa, the Kalahari Desert covers approximately 900,000 square kilometers of land. And while many travelers visit the Kalahari in Botswana, due to its huge geographical mass, the desert also covers land in neighboring Namibia and South Africa. Despite its name, the Kalahari is not even considered a real desert, thanks to its large amount of annual rainfall.
The Kalahari Desert has been home to the native San bushmen for over 20,000 years. So, not only will you have the chance to get off the beaten path to deserted landscapes, but you will also be able to culturally immerse yourself in your surroundings and with local tribes. The word Kalahari is derived from the Tswana word Kgala, which means “the great thirst”, or Kgalagadi, meaning “a waterless place”. Traveling to the Kalahari is a little more remote than its famous neighbor, the Okavango Delta. But if you dare to venture into the lesser-known, you will be rewarded with stunning isolated landscapes and unique experiences.
