The Makgadikgadi Pans and Central Kalahari reveal a completely different side of Botswana, with vast salt flats, open grasslands and immense desert horizons. These remote wilderness areas offer silence, space and dramatic scenery that feel almost otherworldly.

Wildlife here is uniquely adapted to the desert environment. Black-maned Kalahari lions, brown hyena, cheetah, oryx and springbok move across the plains, while the green season brings one of Botswana’s great zebra movements across the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pan grasslands. Visitors can also spend meaningful time with San trackers and community members, whose deep knowledge of the desert adds a rich interpretive layer to the experience.

For travelers seeking solitude and unusual safari moments, Makgadikgadi and the Central Kalahari offer rare adventures, from quad biking across the pans to spending time with habituated meerkats. It is one of Botswana’s most rewarding and remote safari regions.

Makgadikgadi & Central Kalahari FAQs

When is the best time to visit the Makgadikgadi and Central Kalahari?

The best time to visit the Makgadikgadi Pans and Central Kalahari depends on the experience you want.

From December to April, the green season brings dramatic skies, fresh grasslands and major seasonal zebra and wildebeest movements across the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pan region. This is also an excellent time for predators, desert wildlife and photography, while the Central Kalahari can be particularly rewarding after good summer rains as wildlife gathers on the fresh grazing.

From May to October, the dry season reveals the stark beauty of the pans, with clear skies, cooler evenings and excellent conditions for quad biking, sleep-outs and meerkat experiences. In the Central Kalahari, thinning vegetation and drier conditions can improve visibility, while the landscapes become increasingly dramatic and austere.

Both regions are rewarding year-round, but the contrast between seasons is one of the Kalahari’s most memorable features.

What wildlife can I expect to see in the Makgadikgadi Pans and the Central Kalahari?

Makgadikgadi and the Central Kalahari offer unique desert-adapted species not commonly seen in other parts of Botswana. Expect sightings of black-maned Kalahari lions, cheetah, brown hyena, oryx, springbok, bat-eared foxes and meerkats.

During the green season, thousands of zebra move across the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pan grasslands in one of Africa’s great seasonal migrations, drawing predators including lion, cheetah and hyena. Birdlife is also excellent, with Kori bustard, secretarybirds and many migratory species present after the rains.

What is the difference between the Makgadikgadi Pans and the Central Kalahari?

The Makgadikgadi Pans are vast ancient salt flats that create dramatic open desert scenery, with unique activities such as quad biking, sleep-outs and close-up meerkat viewing. The experience here is defined by the openness of the pans and the seasonal movement of zebra across the surrounding grasslands.

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is much larger and more wildlife-focused, with grasslands, dunes and wooded valleys that support black-maned Kalahari lions, cheetah and other desert-adapted species. Wildlife viewing can be especially rewarding after the rains as animals gather on the fresh grasslands.

Many travelers choose to combine both for a complete Kalahari experience, pairing the stark beauty and adventure of the pans with the wildlife richness of the Central Kalahari.

How many nights should I spend in the Makgadikgadi?

We recommend spending three nights in the Makgadikgadi. This gives you enough time to explore the salt pans, spend time with the meerkats and enjoy activities such as quad biking, horseback riding and stargazing without rushing the experience.

When Ubuntu Travel Co-founders Kyle and Leah stayed at Jack’s Camp, they spent just two nights in the Makgadikgadi. Although they had a fantastic experience, both felt that an extra night would have complemented their time there and allowed them to experience more of the region at a slower pace.

If you want to experience the zebra migration, the best window is generally from December to April, with timing influenced by the summer rains. Longer stays work particularly well for travelers who enjoy dramatic light, desert silence and meaningful time with San trackers and community members.

The Makgadikgadi also pairs beautifully with the Central Kalahari or Okavango Delta as part of a broader Botswana safari.

Can you see meerkats year round in the Makgadikgadi?

Yes. Meerkats can be seen year-round in the Makgadikgadi, with habituated groups allowing for close and respectful viewing alongside experienced guides. Sightings are especially rewarding in the early morning when the meerkats emerge from their burrows to warm up and scan the surrounding landscape.

Seasonal conditions can influence the experience. During the green season, vegetation may be taller after the rains, while the dry season generally brings more open conditions and excellent photographic opportunities.

While wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, the Makgadikgadi remains one of the best places in Africa for intimate and consistent meerkat viewing throughout the year.
