Zanzibar’s Beaches, Coral Reefs and Swahili Culture

Zanzibar brings together white-sand beaches, warm Indian Ocean water and layered Swahili history, making it a rewarding finish to a Tanzania safari. On the main island of Unguja, coral reefs and palm-lined shores sit alongside Stone Town, a UNESCO-listed historic trading city shaped by African, Arab, Indian and European influences.

Each coast has a different character: the north offers easier swimming through much of the day, while the east is known for broad tidal flats, seasonal trade winds and a slower rhythm.

Spend your time snorkeling or diving, sailing by dhow, visiting spice farms and exploring Stone Town’s narrow lanes. We recommend choosing your coast around the tides and the way you prefer to swim, explore and dine.

Zanzibar FAQs

When is the best time to visit Zanzibar?

June to October is the main dry season, with lower humidity and comfortable conditions for the beach and Stone Town. January and February are hotter but also generally dry, making them another good window.

The long rains usually fall from March into May, when downpours can be heavy and some smaller properties close. November often brings shorter, less predictable showers.

Diving and snorkeling conditions depend on the site and the month, so your preferred coast and marine activities should shape the final timing.

Quick Ubuntu Travel Guide: Zanzibar by Season

  • June to October: Main dry season, with lower humidity and comfortable beach and Stone Town conditions
  • January to February: Hotter, generally dry weather and another good beach window
  • March to May: Long rains, heavier downpours and possible seasonal property closures
  • November: Shorter, less predictable showers; diving conditions still depend on the coast and site

Which part of Zanzibar should I stay in?

Choose the coast according to how you want to spend your days. Nungwi and Kendwa in the north are less affected by the island’s large tidal range and suit travelers who want to swim throughout most of the day.

The northeast gives convenient access to Mnemba-area snorkeling and diving. The east and southeast have long beaches, pronounced tides and good conditions for kitesurfing, but swimming is more time-dependent.

Stone Town is best for history, food and atmosphere rather than a conventional beach stay. Splitting the trip can provide both experiences.

How many nights do I need in Zanzibar?

Three or four nights is a useful minimum after safari. It gives you several unhurried beach days and time for one or two outings without making the stay feel scheduled. Plan five or six nights if you want to dive on multiple days, split your stay between Stone Town and the coast, or simply build in more rest after a longer safari.

One night in Stone Town followed by four nights at the beach is a well-balanced first visit, although the best split depends on flight times and your chosen coast.

Can I combine Zanzibar with a Tanzania safari?

Yes. Regular flights connect Zanzibar with Arusha and several safari airstrips, making it straightforward to travel from the Serengeti, Ngorongoro area or southern Tanzania to the coast. We generally place Zanzibar at the end of the journey, after the early starts and frequent transfers of a safari. Three or four island nights pair well with a seven- to ten-night mainland itinerary.

Check luggage limits carefully because flights between remote airstrips often require soft-sided bags and have lower weight allowances than international services.

How do Zanzibar’s tides affect a beach stay?

Tides affect the east and southeast coasts most. At low tide, the sea can retreat a considerable distance across reef flats, limiting swimming but exposing broad tidal flats for guided walks and long shoreline views. Water returns at high tide, so daily plans often follow the tide table.

The northwestern beaches around Nungwi and Kendwa generally have less dramatic variation and suit guests who prioritize frequent swimming. Tides affect every coast, although the range varies, and seasonal winds can also change water conditions, so hotel location matters more than a generic island recommendation.
