Where is andBeyond Suyian Lodge?

andBeyond Suyian Lodge is located within Suyian Conservancy, a private wilderness area in northwest Laikipia, Kenya.

The conservancy spans approximately 44,000 acres and sits between the Ewaso Narok River and the slopes of Mount Kenya. It also forms part of a broader mosaic of more than 200,000 acres of privately managed land within the wider Laikipia-Ewaso ecosystem.

AndBeyond Suyian: A LODGE DESIGNED TO SLOW YOU DOWN

Many safari lodges are places guests return to between activities, but Suyian feels more like a destination in its own right.

During their stay, Kyle and Leah were struck by the number of spaces designed for guests to relax, pause, and take in the setting. Private plunge pools, outdoor seating areas, expansive glass doors, and wide terraces allow the views to remain part of the experience throughout the day.

The lodge also includes a spa with two treatment rooms, a steam room, a gym, an infinity pool, a terrace, a bar, and several communal spaces.

Wildlife viewing and game drives at Suyian Conservancy

Kyle noted that wildlife viewing at Suyian feels different from areas such as Lewa and Loisaba.

In some parts of the conservancy, thicker vegetation can make sightings feel less predictable. But that is also part of what gives Suyian its sense of exploration. Rather than focusing only on the number of animals seen, the safari experience is shaped by landscape, discovery, and the possibility of encountering something unexpected.

That said, Suyian Conservancy supports an impressive variety of wildlife. The conservancy is home to more than 100 mammal species, including lion, leopard, cheetah, African wild dog, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, gerenuk, desert warthog, and other species associated with northern Kenya.

Guests may also have the chance to see the Laikipia hartebeest, a rare antelope associated with this part of Kenya. The species has suffered significant population declines, and current conservation efforts are focused on better understanding and protecting the remaining population.

Wildlife viewing takes place across a mosaic of habitats, from dense Vachellia woodland and river frontage along the Ewaso Narok River to open plains, rocky outcrops, and kopjes. In the river valleys and denser vegetation, leopards find the cover they need to remain hidden. Higher up on the plateaus, guests may encounter lions, cheetahs, reticulated giraffes, and plains game moving through more open country.

One of Kyle and Leah’s most memorable moments involved something they had not expected to do on safari: milking camels.

As Leah recalled afterward, they spent much of the experience laughing. The activity also highlighted something that makes northern Kenya particularly interesting. Across Laikipia, wildlife, livestock, and local communities often share the same landscape.

SEARCHING FOR THE BLACK LEOPARD

For many travelers, the rare possibility of seeing a black leopard is one of the reasons Suyian has attracted so much attention.

A black leopard is not a separate species, but a melanistic variation of the African leopard. Its darker coat is caused by a genetic trait that creates an unusually high level of dark pigment. These leopards are exceptionally rare and have achieved an almost mythical status among wildlife enthusiasts and photographers.

Guests can spend several days looking without success, while others may be fortunate enough to catch only a brief glimpse. That unpredictability is part of what makes any sighting so special.

When is the best time to visit Suyian Lodge?

Suyian offers rewarding safari experiences year-round, but the character of a visit changes with the seasons.

The Dry Season

The main dry season typically runs from June to October, with another drier period often occurring from December to early March. These months generally offer the easiest wildlife viewing, as vegetation becomes thinner and animals can be easier to spot across the conservancy.

The cooler, drier months can also be excellent for walking safaris and other active experiences.

The Green Season

The green season brings a different kind of appeal. The long rains typically fall from April to May, with shorter rains often occurring in November and December. These rains transform the landscape, creating lush scenery, dramatic skies, and excellent photographic conditions.

Although thicker vegetation can make some wildlife sightings more challenging, the conservancy feels particularly vibrant, birdlife is abundant, and visitor numbers are often lower.

Kyle and Leah visited Suyian in March and found the experience exceptional. Despite occasional afternoon showers, they enjoyed memorable wildlife sightings, saw the conservancy’s dramatic landscapes at their greenest, and often had sightings entirely to themselves.

It was a reminder that, unlike destinations built around a single seasonal spectacle, Suyian can offer a rewarding safari experience throughout the year.

How long should I spend at Suyian Lodge?

We recommend spending at least three nights at andBeyond Suyian Lodge, although four nights is ideal.

This gives you time to enjoy game drives, explore the conservancy through activities such as walking, camel experiences, horseback riding or scenic helicopter flights, and still leave room to slow down at the lodge itself.

For many of our Kenya itineraries, we like Suyian as a final stop. After more traditional wildlife areas, its combination of dramatic landscapes, generous lodge spaces, river picnics, sundowners, and remote corners of the conservancy can create a wonderful sense of conclusion.

How does Suyian Compare to Lewa and Loisaba?

Lewa, Loisaba, and Suyian are all part of the broader Laikipia safari experience, but each offers something different.

• Lewa: Best known for rhino conservation and is one of the best places in Kenya to see both black and white rhino. Its rolling landscapes, views toward Mount Kenya, and excellent wildlife viewing make it a strong introduction to Laikipia.
• Loisaba: Offers a balance of excellent wildlife viewing and unique experiences. Alongside game drives, visitors can sleep on outdoor beds beneath the stars, meet the conservancy’s anti-poaching dogs, and learn about the reserve’s conservation work, including its efforts to protect rhinos and support the coexistence of wildlife and local pastoral communities.
• Suyian: This conservancy feels noticeably wilder and more remote. The landscape is dominated by dramatic rock formations, escarpments, and thick riverine bush, creating a very different atmosphere from its neighbors. Wildlife can be more challenging to spot, but that’s part of the appeal. Wildlife can be less predictable in some areas, but that is part of the sense of discovery. Guests may search for the rare black leopard, while activities such as horseback riding, camel experiences, guided walks, and scenic helicopter flights add another dimension to the safari.

How to get to Suyian Lodge

At Ubuntu Travel, we usually recommend arriving at andBeyond Suyian Lodge by air, although road transfers are also possible depending on the broader itinerary.

• Safarilink and Air Kenya offer scheduled light aircraft flights twice daily from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to Loisaba Airstrip. From there, it is a one-hour vehicle transfer to the conservancy. Private charters can also land directly at andBeyond Suyian Lodge’s airstrip. 
• Road journeys involve taking a 4×4 from Nairobi or Nanyuki. The former takes about five hours, while the latter takes approximately 90 minutes, depending on traffic.
