Uganda Safari Tours: Gorilla Trekking, Chimpanzees, and Cultural Discovery

Tailor-made journeys through Uganda’s wild heart. Trek with mountain gorillas in Bwindi, track chimpanzees in Kibale, cruise beneath Murchison Falls, and explore rich cultural connections.

Uganda is one of Africa’s most underrated safari destinations, offering remarkable primate encounters, dramatic landscapes, and far fewer crowds than its neighbors. From the misty montane forests of Bwindi to the tree-climbing lions of Queen Elizabeth National Park, every corner delivers something unique.

But there’s more than wildlife. Uganda’s crater lakes, forested volcanoes, and the snowcapped Rwenzori Mountains create jaw-dropping backdrops. Our journeys also include opportunities to engage with community-driven initiatives, including our longstanding partnership with Love One International in Masindi.

Whether you’re looking for a classic circuit or something off the beaten track, Uganda combines affordability, authenticity, and diversity in a way few destinations can.

When is the Best Time to Visit Uganda?

Uganda is a fantastic year-round safari destination, but your experience can vary depending on the season and your activities. The most important factor for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking is rainfall. Trails are steeper and muddier during the rainy seasons, while drier months offer more comfortable trekking conditions.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking

The dry seasons are ideal for gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Peak Seasons (Best Conditions)

June to September – The longest dry season, offering excellent trekking conditions with minimal rain.

December to February – Another dry season, ideal for gorilla trekking and wildlife safaris, with good visibility.

Low Seasons (More Availability & Fewer Crowds)

March to May (Long Rainy Season) – Heavier rains make trekking more challenging, but fewer tourists mean more permit availability.

October to November (Short Rainy Season) – Rain is less intense, and gorillas are still easily tracked, making perfect for those wanting a quieter experience.

Ubuntu Travel’s Tip: Gorilla permits are limited and should be booked well in advance for peak months. Our team can help secure your spot and guide you through the process.

 FAQs About Safaris in Uganda

How do I get to Uganda from the USA?

Most travelers from the U.S. fly into Kigali International Airport (KGL), the main international gateway to Rwanda. There are no direct flights from the United States, but several convenient one-stop connections make the journey relatively smooth.

Recommended Routes:

  • From the East Coast:

Fly from New York (JFK) or Washington D.C. (IAD) via Brussels (BRU) on Brussels Airlines, which offers one of the most direct and reliable connections to Kigali.
Qatar Airways offers service from JFK and other major U.S. cities via Doha (DOH).

  • From the West Coast:

Connect via Amsterdam (AMS), Istanbul (IST), or Doha (DOH) from cities like Los Angeles or San Francisco.
KLM, Turkish Airlines, and Qatar Airways are popular carriers for these routes.

Once in Kigali, you’re only a short transfer away from beginning your journey into Rwanda’s national parks. Volcanoes National Park is about 2.5 hours by road from Kigali, and domestic flights or private charters are available for those heading to Akagera or Nyungwe.

Ubuntu Travel handles all regional logistics, including VIP airport services, scenic transfers, and seamless park access — ensuring your arrival in Rwanda is stress-free and personalized from the moment you land.

How physically demanding is gorilla trekking in Uganda?

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi or Mgahinga can be both physically and technically challenging. Trails often lead through steep, forested terrain with high humidity.

Like Rwanda, treks are loosely categorized into short, medium, and longer options based on guest ability. However, since gorillas move frequently, it’s best to be prepared for treks that last anywhere from two to six hours.

At Ubuntu Travel, we have team members who have completed gorilla treks in both Bwindi and Mgahinga. While each experience is different, we use our first-hand insight to help match you with the most suitable trekking sector based on your fitness and preferences. Local porters are also available to assist with your backpack and offer support along the trail.

Is Uganda safe to visit for luxury safari travelers?

Yes, Uganda is considered safe for tourists, especially in well-known safari regions. Areas like Bwindi, Kibale, and Murchison Falls are secure and regularly visited by international travelers. Gorilla trekking and safari operations are professionally managed and tightly regulated, with ranger-led activities in national parks and excellent safety standards.

Ubuntu Travel works only with trusted lodges, certified guides, and vetted transportation services, ensuring a seamless and secure experience throughout your trip. We also stay updated on local advisories and will guide you on best practices when traveling through towns or cities.

What wildlife can I see in Uganda?

Uganda offers a rich diversity of wildlife, especially for primate lovers. In Bwindi and Mgahinga, you can track endangered mountain gorillas. Kibale Forest is home to the highest density of wild chimpanzees in Africa, while Queen Elizabeth National Park offers unique sightings like tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector.

Other highlights include:

  • Elephants, hippos, and crocodiles on Nile River cruises in Murchison Falls
  • Over 1,060 bird species, including the rare shoebill stork
  • Golden monkeys in Mgahinga
  • Small herds of Rothschild’s giraffe and Uganda kob

While Uganda is not a traditional “Big Five” destination (rhino only exists in sanctuary settings like Ziwa), it delivers a thrilling mix of wildlife, scenery, and adventure.

Do I need vaccines or malaria prevention for Uganda?

Yes. We strongly recommend visiting a travel health clinic before your safari. The following are common requirements and recommendations:

  • Yellow Fever vaccine is required for entry. Carry your vaccination certificate.
  • Malaria preventatives are advised for most parts of Uganda, especially for lowland areas and during the rainy season.
  • Routine vaccinations (like Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus) should be up to date.

Ubuntu Travel provides personalized travel preparation guidance, but your final medical plan should always come from a licensed healthcare provider.
