Angama Amboseli

Where Elephants Roam Below Kilimanjaro

Amboseli National Park, located in southern Kenya near the Tanzanian border, is one of Africa’s most iconic safari landscapes. Framed by the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, the park is renowned for its large, relaxed elephant herds and exceptional photographic opportunities. Open plains, seasonal wetlands and ancient dry lakebeds create reliable sightings of giraffe, zebra, cheetah, hyena and hundreds of bird species throughout the year.

Just north of Amboseli, the Chyulu Hills reveal a completely different side of Kenya. This volcanic ridge, known as the “Green Hills of Africa,” offers rolling hills, ancient lava flows, hidden valleys and some of the country’s most exclusive private conservancies. It is home to remarkable wildlife, Maasai community partnerships and luxury lodges that specialise in horseback safaris, mountain biking, walking adventures and breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro.

Together, Amboseli and the Chyulu Hills create one of Kenya’s most rewarding dual-safari experiences, combining big elephant encounters with dramatic scenery, outdoor adventure and meaningful conservation impact.

 FAQs About The Mara Conservancies

When is the best time to visit Amboseli and the Chyulu Hills?

The best time to visit Amboseli and the Chyulu Hills is from June to October, when the weather is dry, visibility is excellent and wildlife is easy to see around water sources. This is also the most reliable period for clear views of Mount Kilimanjaro at sunrise.

The green season from November to May brings lush landscapes, dramatic skies and beautiful photographic conditions. Short rains can occur, but they create atmospheric light and striking scenes across Amboseli’s wetlands and the volcanic slopes of the Chyulu Hills. Wildlife viewing remains strong year round due to resident elephant herds and a wide variety of plains game and predators.

What wildlife can I expect to see in Amboseli and the Chyulu Hills?

Amboseli is famous for its large, relaxed elephant herds set against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. The park also offers sightings of cheetah, hyena, buffalo, hippo, zebra, giraffe and more than four hundred species of birds.

The Chyulu Hills provide a contrasting experience, with volcanic forests, rolling hills and open plains that support leopard, cheetah, elephant, giraffe and a range of smaller mammals. Together, the two regions create a diverse safari circuit that blends iconic big game with dramatic scenery and excellent photographic opportunities.

What activities are available in Amboseli and the Chyulu Hills?

Amboseli offers classic game drives, birding and exceptional photography beneath Mount Kilimanjaro. Hot air balloon safaris above the plains provide unforgettable sunrise views.

In the Chyulu Hills, activities are more varied and adventurous. Guests can enjoy horseback safaris, mountain biking, guided walking safaris, lava-tube explorations and scenic flights. Luxury lodges also partner with local Maasai communities for meaningful cultural visits that support conservation and local livelihoods.
