Amboseli and the Chyulu Hills are rewarding year-round, although the dry seasons from June to October and January to February generally offer the easiest wildlife viewing. Vegetation becomes thinner, animals gather around reliable water sources and conditions are particularly good for game drives, walking and other outdoor activities. Early mornings often provide the clearest views of Mount Kilimanjaro, although visibility can never be guaranteed.

The greener months fall mainly from November to December and again from March to May. These periods bring lush landscapes, dramatic skies and beautiful photographic conditions across Amboseli’s wetlands and the volcanic slopes of the Chyulu Hills. Rain may occasionally interrupt activities or affect road conditions, but resident elephant herds, plains game and predators continue to provide rewarding wildlife viewing throughout the year.

Amboseli is famous for its large elephant herds set against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. The park also supports lion, cheetah, spotted hyena, buffalo, hippo, zebra, giraffe and more than 400 bird species across its open plains, seasonal wetlands and permanent swamps.

The Chyulu Hills offer a contrasting wildlife experience, with volcanic hills, woodland and open plains supporting elephant, buffalo, leopard, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra and a variety of antelope. Wildlife is often more dispersed than in Amboseli, making each sighting feel particularly rewarding. Together, the two regions create a diverse safari circuit combining iconic elephant encounters, varied habitats and exceptional photographic opportunities.

Amboseli offers classic game drives, birding and exceptional wildlife photography beneath Mount Kilimanjaro. Hot-air balloon safaris above the wider Amboseli ecosystem provide unforgettable sunrise views of the plains, wildlife and Africa’s highest mountain.
