FAQs About The Cape Winelands
When is the best time to visit the Cape Winelands?
The Cape Winelands are beautiful year round, but in our opinion the best time to visit is from September to May, when the weather is warm and the vineyards are lush and vibrant. Summer in the Cape, from December to February, offers long, sunny days that are perfect for wine tastings, leisurely lunches and scenic outdoor views. Autumn, from March to May, brings golden vineyards and cooler temperatures, creating ideal conditions for hiking, photography and relaxed culinary experiences.
Winter can be cooler and wetter, but it is a wonderfully cosy season with roaring fireplaces, quieter estates and excellent value at many boutique wine farms. For travellers who enjoy slower moments, rich cuisine and peaceful tasting rooms, winter in the Cape Winelands has a charm all of its own.
How many days should I spend in the Cape Winelands?
How much do you like wine? Jokes aside, most of our US travellers spend two to three nights in the Cape Winelands, which allows enough time to explore Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Paarl at a relaxed pace. This length pairs perfectly with a Cape Town and safari combination, giving you time to unwind between the city and the bush.
Food and wine enthusiasts often stay longer to enjoy multiple tasting experiences, scenic drives, farm tours and wellness activities at vineyard estates. With so many exceptional restaurants and wine farms in close proximity, the extra nights are always worth it.
Is the Cape Winelands family friendly?
Oh absolutely, and we cannot wait to take our little ones, Charlie and Stella, to these gorgeous wine estates. There is so much more than wine in the Cape Winelands, with many estates catering to children through wonderful farm and outdoor activities.
Many estates and boutique hotels welcome families with open gardens, wide outdoor spaces and relaxed dining. Several wine farms offer picnics, fun pairings, farm animals or interactive tastings suited to younger guests. While some cellars focus mainly on adults, the region as a whole is extremely accommodating for multi generational travel, especially when paired with child friendly outdoor activities and gentle scenic walks.
Can families visit Kruger’s private concessions?
Yes. The more the merrier. Many luxury lodges in Kruger’s private concessions are very family friendly, offering spacious suites, children’s programs, flexible mealtimes and private vehicles for multi generational groups. While some walking activities have age minimums for safety, game drives and lodge experiences remain accessible and welcoming for families of all ages.
The green season often includes excellent family specials and added value at selected lodges, making it a popular time for longer stays and relaxed, crowd-free safaris.
