The Private Conservancies of the Masai Mara

The Mara Conservancies form a network of community-owned conservation areas surrounding the Masai Mara National Reserve, creating some of East Africa’s most exclusive safari experiences. The conservancies protect important wildlife habitat, provide income for Maasai landowners and offer travelers a quieter alternative to busier areas of the main reserve.

Wildlife moves freely throughout the Greater Mara Ecosystem, supporting excellent year-round sightings of lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant and abundant plains game. During the Great Migration months from July to October, the conservancies provide a calmer, more private base from which to explore the region’s dramatic river crossings and predator activity.

Unlike the National Reserve, the conservancies generally permit activities such as controlled off-road driving, night drives and guided walking safaris, depending on the conservancy and camp. With fewer vehicles, carefully managed tourism and excellent guiding, the Mara Conservancies combine privacy, meaningful conservation impact and classic Masai Mara landscapes.

 Mara Conservancies FAQs

What makes the Mara Conservancies different from the Masai Mara National Reserve?

The Mara Conservancies offer a more exclusive and flexible safari experience than the National Reserve. These community-owned conservation areas lie mainly along the northern and eastern edges of the Reserve, forming part of the wider, largely unfenced Greater Mara Ecosystem through which wildlife moves freely.

Carefully controlled visitor and vehicle numbers create quieter, more intimate wildlife sightings, particularly of lion, cheetah and leopard. Conservancies also generally allow activities that are restricted inside the Reserve, including controlled off-road driving, night drives and guided walking safaris, although activities vary between camps and conservancies.

The conservancies operate through partnerships between Maasai landowners, tourism operators and conservation organizations. Lease payments and conservancy fees provide income for participating landowners, while tourism helps protect important habitat and wildlife corridors beyond the National Reserve. This model supports both conservation and local livelihoods while offering travelers a less crowded safari experience.

When is the best time to visit the Mara Conservancies?

The Mara Conservancies are excellent year-round thanks to resident wildlife and low vehicle density. The best time for dramatic Migration activity is typically from July to October, when the herds move through the wider ecosystem. January to March offers excellent big cat viewing and fewer visitors, while the green season from November to May brings lush landscapes, beautiful light for photography and attractive value at many camps.

Ubuntu Travel Co-founders Kyle and Leah visited the Mara Conservancies in March 2026 and experienced exceptional wildlife viewing, including memorable sightings of lion, cheetah and leopard. With wildlife moving freely across the Greater Mara Ecosystem, the conservancies remain rewarding throughout the year.

How many days should I spend in the Mara Conservancies?

We generally recommend spending at least three nights in the Mara Conservancies. This allows enough time for game drives, big cat sightings, guided walks and other activities without feeling rushed.

Four to five nights is ideal if you plan to stay in different conservancies or explore contrasting regions of the Greater Mara Ecosystem. Moving between conservancies can offer varied landscapes, wildlife concentrations and safari experiences, while giving you a broader understanding of the Mara beyond a single camp.

Are the Mara Conservancies good for first-time safari travelers?

Yes. The Mara Conservancies are an excellent choice for first-time safari travelers, offering abundant resident wildlife, exceptional guiding and a more exclusive safari experience. Carefully controlled vehicle numbers create quieter sightings, particularly around lion, cheetah and leopard, giving guests more time and space to observe wildlife.

Activities such as controlled off-road driving, night drives and guided walking safaris also offer a more varied introduction to the Mara, although availability differs between conservancies and camps. Luxury tented camps provide personalized service, while the community conservancy model gives travelers a greater understanding of how tourism supports Maasai landowners, local livelihoods and wildlife conservation.
