Rhino Conservation and Big Five Safaris

Set within the dramatic Waterberg Mountains in South Africa’s Limpopo province, Marakele National Park offers a unique blend of rugged landscapes, diverse wildlife and meaningful conservation experiences. Known as a place of sanctuary, Marakele supports a wide range of species, from sable, kudu and eland to elephant, lion and leopard, all thriving within this protected mountain environment.

At the heart of the park lies the Marataba private concession, a 51,890-acre wilderness home to two luxury lodges. Here, guests enjoy a more exclusive safari experience, with expert guiding, varied terrain and the opportunity to engage with one of South Africa’s most important rhino conservation programs.

When is the Best Time to Visit Marakele

Marakele National Park is wonderful malaria-free Big Five safari option for all travelers. A year-round destination, offering a variety of safari activities. Below is a basic guide to when we believe is the best times to visit.

Dry Season (May to September)
Cooler temperatures and thinner vegetation make wildlife easier to spot. This is the best time for consistent Big Five sightings and comfortable game drives.

Green Season (October to April)
Warmer weather and afternoon thunderstorms bring lush landscapes and excellent birding. Wildlife is more dispersed, but the scenery is at its most vibrant.

Shoulder Season (April and October)
