Mozambique FAQs
When is the best time to visit Mozambique?
The best time to visit Mozambique is generally during the dry season from May to September, when the weather is warm, skies are typically clear and conditions are excellent for snorkeling, diving and time on the beach. This period works particularly well for travelers ending a Southern Africa safari, with comfortable temperatures and generally settled coastal conditions.
From October to April, Mozambique enters its warmer, wetter summer season, bringing higher humidity, tropical rainfall and greener landscapes. Rain often arrives in short, heavy bursts, while ocean temperatures remain warm and the coastline feels noticeably more tropical.
Marine wildlife also varies by region and season. Around Inhambane and Tofo, whale sharks and manta rays are a major draw, while the Bazaruto Archipelago is particularly important for dugongs, dolphins, turtles and other marine life.
Overall, Mozambique is a rewarding year-round coastal destination, but May to September remains our preferred window for the best balance of weather, beach conditions and safari combinations.
Is Mozambique a good destination after a safari?
Yes. Mozambique is one of the most rewarding post-safari beach extensions in Southern Africa. With warm turquoise water, soft white-sand beaches and convenient flight connections from Johannesburg and the Greater Kruger region, it offers a seamless transition from wildlife adventure to relaxed island time.
For the Bazaruto Archipelago, travelers typically fly into Vilanculos before continuing to their island lodge by helicopter or boat. Many of our guests finish their safari with a few nights in Bazaruto or Ponta Mamoli, enjoying exceptional diving, snorkeling and time to simply slow down after days in the bush.

Where are the best beaches in Mozambique?
From our experience and client feedback, the finest beaches in Mozambique are found in the Bazaruto Archipelago and along the coastline of Ponta Mamoli. These regions are known for powder-soft sand, clear turquoise water and vibrant coral reefs ideal for snorkeling.
Benguerra Island, in particular, is famous for its remote bays, calm lagoons and secluded stretches of coastline that feel wonderfully removed from the outside world.
Is Mozambique safe to visit?
Yes, in the southern regions where Ubuntu Travel operates. We work exclusively with trusted lodges and local partners in Vilanculos, the Bazaruto Archipelago and Ponta Mamoli, where tourism infrastructure is well established and guest movements are carefully coordinated.
Most of the serious unrest reported in international news is concentrated in parts of northern Mozambique, particularly Cabo Delgado and neighboring areas. These regions are far removed from the southern beach and island destinations included in our itineraries and are not part of the journeys we recommend.
Travel between airports and lodges is carefully planned, with private road transfers, light-aircraft flights and helicopter transfers used where appropriate. This helps keep the journey smooth, efficient and well supported from arrival to departure.
How many nights should I spend in Mozambique?
Most travelers spend three to four nights in Mozambique after a safari. This gives you enough time to settle into the slower rhythm of the coast, enjoy snorkeling, diving or dhow cruises and still have plenty of time to simply relax.
For travelers staying in the Bazaruto Archipelago, three nights works well, while four nights gives you more time to enjoy the island properly without feeling rushed. After a longer safari itinerary, we often prefer that extra night.
Is Mozambique a malaria-risk destination?
Yes. Mozambique is a malaria-risk destination, including the southern coastal regions and islands we visit. We recommend speaking with your travel doctor about malaria prevention before departure, based on your individual health and itinerary.
The lodges we recommend provide mosquito protection and repellent, but we also advise using insect repellent and wearing long sleeves in the evenings.
Please consult your doctor for up-to-date health advice based on your personal health history and travel itinerary.
