The Serengeti National Park is undoubtedly one of the world’s most renowned wilderness areas. It continues to inspire safari travelers and wildlife enthusiasts alike. The Maasai named it “a place where land runs forever,” and with sweeping grasslands, rocky outcrops, and mixed woodlands stretching over 1,475,000 hectares (3,644,800 acres), it is easy to see why.

The Serengeti-Mara ecosystem is best known for hosting the (now second-largest)* overland mammal migration on Earth, the Great Wildebeest Migration. The scale is extraordinary. Over 1.5 million wildebeest, 400,000 zebra, and 200,000 Thomson’s gazelles move with the rains throughout the year, crossing into Kenya’s Masai Mara from around July and returning south between October and November.

*In June 2024, African Parks confirmed that the Great Nile Migration in South Sudan is the largest land mammal migration on earth, with an estimated six million antelope moving across the Boma Badingilo Jonglei Landscape (BBJL)

Beyond the Great Migration, life in Tanzania’s oldest national park thrives year-round. Big cat sightings are exceptional. Lions patrol the plains, leopards rest in riverine woodlands, and cheetahs stretch across open grasslands. Herds of elephant and buffalo move steadily through the landscape, while giraffe frame the horizon.

Serengeti Safari FAQs

Planning a luxury safari in the Serengeti often starts with a few key questions. Our team has personally selected and reviewed these lodges, with this guide updated for 2026 to reflect the best locations, migration timing, and overall safari experience.

What are the best luxury safari lodges in the Serengeti?

In our opinion, the top luxury Serengeti safari lodges include Singita Sasakwa Lodge, Singita Sabora Tented Camp, Asilia Sayari, andBeyond Serengeti Under Canvas and Nyasi Migrational Camp. Each offers a distinct experience, from private reserves (Singita Grumeti) with fewer vehicles to mobile camps that follow the Great Migration.

Where should I stay in the Serengeti to see the Great Migration?

It depends on the time of year. The northern Serengeti is best from July to October for river crossings, while the western corridor sees the migration from May to July. Luxury Mobile camps (Glamping) move throughout the year to stay close to the herds.

When is the best time to visit the Serengeti for a safari?

The Serengeti offers exceptional year-round wildlife viewing. The best time to visit depends on what you want to experience, with the Great Migration moving through different regions throughout the year. Traveling during the calving season or in off-peak months can also offer fewer crowds and a more exclusive safari experience.

Is the Serengeti worth it for a luxury safari?

Absolutely. The Serengeti is one of the best destinations in Africa for a luxury safari, offering world-class lodges, private safari areas, and exceptional wildlife viewing, including the Big Five and the Great Migration. We recommend spending at least three days at one lodge to truly settle in and enjoy the wilderness.

Are there private safari experiences in the Serengeti?

Yes, private safari experiences are available, particularly in areas like the Singita Grumeti Reserve and Lamai Triangle, where you can enjoy fewer vehicles, exclusive lodges, and more personalized guiding.

Which Serengeti lodges are best for honeymoon or couples?

Lodges like Singita Sabora Tented Camp, Lemala Kuria Hills, and Serengeti Bushtops Camp are ideal for honeymooners, offering privacy, beautiful views, and elevated luxury in remote settings. For those wanting to follow the Great Migration, we often recommend combining a luxury mobile camp with a more traditional lodge in the Serengeti or Masai Mara, Kenya, creating a well-balanced and seamless safari experience.
