Embracing Conservation: Five Impact Experiences

At Ubuntu Travel, our commitment extends beyond the thrill of (just) luxury safari adventures. We pride ourselves on fostering genuine conservation efforts and sustainable community development across Africa’s wilderness areas. With meticulous care, we’ve selected a collection of bucket-list conservation experiences aimed at leaving a positive impact while you travel. These endeavors range from engaging in wildlife preservation to actively participating in local community-driven initiatives. Each curated experience not only promises an immersive encounter but also ensures a meaningful contribution towards the preservation of Africa’s natural heritage and the well-being of its communities.  Enjoy a quick video of Co-founder, Kyle Green, briefly explaining our conservation and community development ethos!

Embracing Conservation: Five Impact Experiences

1) Elephant Havens in Botswana

Co-founder, Kyle Green | Okavango Delta, Botswana

Staying true to my fascination with Botswana, I’m excited about a visit to the Elephant Havens in the Okavango Delta. Much like the admirable efforts of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya, this sanctuary rescues and nurtures orphaned baby elephants, aiming to reintroduce them into the wild. An exciting part is the journey to the orphanage by helicopter, which adds to the remote and untamed allure. I’ve had the pleasure of flying over the Okavango Delta in a helicopter once before, and it was an unforgettable experience.

2) Community School Visits

Director of Operations, Jenna Chase

Visiting a rural community school and spending time with the kids sounds like such an authentic and impactful experience. I’m keen to grasp the challenges faced by students in these remote areas. There are special programs, like the Environmental Education Lesson outside the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, where I can join the children. It’ll be fascinating to observe their teaching methods compared to what I know. There’s always a chance to learn something new! Additionally, projects like the nutritional program and sustainable vegetable gardens are vital. With climate change affecting water security, I’d love to understand how we can offer more help.

3) Pangolin Conservation Experience

Co-Founder, Leah Green | Phinda Private Game Reserve, South Africa

After countless safari experiences, I have not yet had the privilege of seeing a pangolin in the wild. These unique creatures are so fascinating, and the Pangolin Conservation Experience available at Phinda Private Game Reserve is at the top of my bucket list. The chance to spend time with conservation experts in such an intimate wildlife setting would be truly unforgettable. The work these teams do on the ground is the foundation for the survival of pangolins in the future. As one of the most trafficked animals in the world, they are very difficult to spot on a typical safari adventure and absolutely at the top of my “must-see” list!

4) Marine Predator Tagging

Marketing Manager, Sean Messham | Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique

To be honest, even though I have grown up in Cape Town surrounded by marine life, I am completely out of my depth on this one. And this is why I would love to experience a Marine Tagging Expedition in Mozambique. It’s a possible five-day itinerary whereby you join a dedicated marine conservation team to help tag key marine predators, like giant trevally and grey reef sharks, in the Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique. Of course – while staying at a luxury lodge on Benguerra Island and having full access to the island activities and fresh island cuisine.

5) Rhino-dehorning Experience

Accounts & Operations Coordinator, Josie Du Preez | Phinda Private Game Reserve, South Africa

I used to work at andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve and have actually been lucky enough to be a spectator to one of these conservation activities before, but I’ve recently had a baby, and as I mom I now dream of being able to share this with my son. Heading out with the research team at andBeyond Phinda, watching them work and seeing everything that goes in to their research was eye opening. I can’t think of a better way to foster an appreciation for these endangered animals in my son, than showing him everything that goes into their conservation.
